About the Author

Thuyen Phiet graduated in 1957 from the École Normale de Musique in Paris, France, where she studied under Jules Gentil and Alfred Cortot. She also graduated Premier Prix in Chamber Music Performance at the Conservatoire International de Musique in Paris, France. 

From 1957 to 1975, Thuyen Phiet was a Professor at the National Conservatory of Music in Saigon (Vietnam). After arriving to the United States, she became Assistant Professor at Bridgewater College (Virginia), where she taught from 1975 until 1981.

Since then, Thuyen has published a series of books applying the See-Hear-Play Method for piano, enabling students to SEE the staff and read the notes, SEE the keyboard to place the fingers, HEAR the sound value of each note and PLAY the singing counting. 

In 1982, she presented the See-Hear-Play Method (1982 edition) at the Virginia State Convention at the University of Virginia in Richmond). That year, she also began teaching a group piano class at the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) using the See-Hear-Play Method, which she taught until 2003.

In 2003, Thuyen relocated to Boston with her son and his family, where she continued to teach privately and give regular seminars on the See-Hear-Play Method. During the COVID-19 epidemic, while quarantined at home with no students to teach, she began the 2021 edition of the See-Hear-Play Method, arriving to this course after countless revisions. 

Thuyen Phiet is a member of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), NEPTA (New England Piano Teachers Association), MMTA (Massachusetts Music Teachers Association), NVMTA (Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association) and VMTA (Virginia Music Teachers Association).
